NSW Justice, a government agency responsible for Correctional Centres in New South Wales, Australia, operates numerous offices and facilities across the region.
With legislation banning single use plastics coming into place later in the year and a commitment to sustainability and cost-effectiveness, NSW Justice sought innovative solutions to reduce waste generated from disposable cutlery used in their Correctional Centres.
Disposable cutlery usage not only contributed significantly to environmental waste but also incurred substantial costs due to the ongoing need for purchasing and disposing of single-use plastic utensils. Moreover, the disposal of plastic cutlery posed environmental hazards. Also due to upcoming legislation banning the sale of single use plastics, NSW Justice had to act quickly to ensure continued supply of cutlery for prisoner use.
In response to these challenges, NSW Justice partnered with Actisafe, a leading provider of eco-friendly workplace solutions. Actisafe proposed the implementation of their Reusable Cutlery Products as a sustainable alternative to disposable utensils.
The reusable cutlery set consisted of high-quality, durable Econoblend forks, knives, spoons, and teaspoons, each designed for long-term use and easy cleaning.
NSW Justice identified several options that could be suitable for use in Correctional Centres around NSW. With these items in hand, they were put through a stringent testing regime including bending the product, melting the product, sharpening the product and more.
The Actisafe Econoblend Cutlery products passed these tests with flying colours, getting by far the highest score of all products tested.
The implementation process began with a full scale role out of all NSW Justice Correctional Facilities for a period of 12 months. Actisafe was entrusted with stocking, sorting, and distributing the products to all NSW Correctional Centres.
Actisafe's Reusable Cutlery solution proved instrumental in helping NSW Justice achieve significant cost savings, enhance environmental sustainability, improve employee satisfaction, and meet Legislation requirements.
By embracing reusable alternatives, NSW Justice set a precedent for other government agencies and organizations to follow, demonstrating that small changes can lead to substantial benefits for both the environment and the bottom line.
This case study highlights the effectiveness of proactive sustainability initiatives and underscores the importance of partnership between innovative suppliers like Actisafe and forward-thinking organizations like NSW Justice in achieving meaningful environmental and economic outcomes.
